Furnishings

It is almost a month now since I updated this blog. Clearly life in Berlin has fallen into a normalcy that provides less newsworthy content. It is scarcely a year ago that I received the official offer to come here, and our apartment still has much work to be done. Nonetheless routine dominates and this intense period approaching the end of the semester leaves little time for rumination.

We did receive our new dining table and chairs. The table is glass with aluminum legs in a shape that is called a "boat form" since it bows slightly outward in the middle and is marginally narrower at the ends. It is quite a large table with seating for 6 easily and 8 without too much crowding. The chairs that go with it have padded seats and aluminum legs. They are surprisingly solid and heavy, and also surprisingly comfortable. We asked for three colors: black, red, and blue. The cat especially likes lying in the square U-shaped platform under the chairs.

We also bought shades that fit into the windows inside the frame that holds the glass (as opposed to standard US shades that hang outside the frames and get in the way when the window is opened). The shades in the living room are blue, yellow, and orange, and reflect about 40% of the light. Those in the bedroom are dark blue and reflect about 80% of the light, which is very useful at this time of year when sunlight begins at about 4.00 am.

Berlin's architecture continues to fascinate. The Amtsgericht (law courts) for Wedding looks virtually like a palace, even though the district itself is relatively poor. We were in Wedding to look at fixtures for the small bathroom, which is still waiting for people to finish working on it.
